May 1: Swabia Creek, Queen City Co-op Nursery, 12:30 p.m.; Little Swatara Creek, Friedensburg Fish and Game Association, noon. May 2: Tulpehocken Creek special regulations, Keystone Trophy Trout area, from Reber’s Bridge to covered bridge, Blue Marsh Lake office, noon. May 5: (final spring stockings in Berks County) Hay and Antietam creeks and Antietam Lake, Mount Penn Exit, Route 422, 11:30 a.m.
Join us for our annual trout rodeo for the Berks Big Brothers and Big Sisters program, May 20, in Oley.
Volunteers are needed to mentor youngsters as they fish for trout. Just like BB/BS is a mentoring program so is the aim of our annual Bob and Jeff Miller Trout Fishing Clinic. Berks County Youth and Family Field Day, Saturday, May 13, starting at 8 a.m. Adults, boys and girls, ages 6 and up will participate in fishing, boating, shooting, trapping, archery and entomology programs, at Kutztown Rod and Gun Club. Daniel Boone Rod and Gun Club
Daniel Boone Rod and Gun Club will conduct a free Youth Field Day, June 10, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., for youngsters 9-16 years old accompanied by adults. Activities include rifle and shotgun shooting, archery and trapping. Trout Unlimited and the Ruffed Grouse Society will be hand. Youth Gobbler Photo Prizes
The Reading Ridge Runner Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Reading Eagle will again publish youth trophy gobbler photos on Sunday’s Hunting/Fish page. Each youngster, ages 16 or younger, whose trophy photo is published will receive a free JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) membership to the NWTF, a free turkey hunting accessory and entry into a drawing for a turkey hunting package.
Photos via jpgs at least 800 pixels wide, well lit and composed, should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. through June 3. Entries must include youngster’s name, age, contact information and brief details about the gobbler and the hunt.
The NWTF is dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and preservation of our hunting heritage. In 2016, the Reading Ridge Runners chapter spent more $6,400 in local Berks County habitat projects and provided more than 150 free JAKES memberships to youth in Berks County.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will conclude spring trout stocking next week with the final waters being: Swabia Creek, May 1; Tulpehocken Creek (Keystone Trophy Trout stretch) May 2; Hay and Antietam creeks and Antietam Lake, May 5. Walleye season reopens May 6 and bass is catch-and-release-only through June 16. . Also bass fishing is closed, May 1-June 16, on Susquehanna River from Sunbury to Holtwood Dam and on Juniata River from Port Royal to the mouth, including tributaries.
